What causes a bad EGR?

Have you ever wondered why an EGR might malfunction, become clogged, or fail? The explanation is simple: One of the primary reasons for EGR failure is the accumulation of carbon particles from exhaust gases. These particles build up in the EGR and intake system as they are recirculated from the exhaust manifold back through the system. Over time, they form a sticky, black, thick resin that eventually clogs and causes the EGR to stick closed, preventing it from functioning properly. A prime example in the image below.

Are you asking if that's the sole reason?
Unfortunately, there are indeed a few reasons, which we will explain to you right here.
Corrosion is another factor that can harm the EGR valve, leading to a system malfunction and causing it to stay open or closed. Additionally, general mechanical wear can result in EGR valve failure, as the components may no longer withstand constant use. This wear can cause pins and spacing's to deteriorate, leading to loose fittings and unwanted gaps.

Additionally, electronic problems can lead to EGR valve failure, which means there are numerous potential causes for a malfunctioning EGR and a lengthy process to identify the primary issue.
